Hello,
tonight I just wanted to get back to you so that you know what is happening in our country and in our lives. I reported last night that the awaited rally did not take place yesterday and that it was rescheduled for today. But in the morning the newsreporters were saying that the demonstrators seemingly grew tired which is no big surprise when you consider that there is almost no food in the little kiosks, and the little which is available has become very expensive. And also when you think that many of those people living in the slum areas live on sometimes less than1 euro a day. That means there is no extra energy to fight more than a few days. And the election is already more than a week ago and in all these days no serious work has been done. In any case, we are grateful that the tension has eased a little bit and the two parties seem to grow more willing to enter a dialouge and some discussion.
We still hear horrifying stories from our friends and workers where people were butchered or others are seeking shelter at policestations, others lost literally all their property and have no clue on how to start life again.
Yesterday I talked to Abdi over the phone while he was extremely terrified. Bullets flying around the estate where he is staying day and night and neighbours burned alive. We were wishing we could get him out of there, but there is just no way of going into town without risking life and car. Everone tries to stay put as much as possible. Here at our place we can move about a bit, like helping out at the center for internally displaced people. Just about 5 km from our station we have about 800 refugees from the Massai land, Kikuyus who were chased from their land by the Massai. We are helping them out with food, blankets, medicine and other important things. But the feeling is that things are starting to settle down a bit, the big challenge now is to resettle the many displaced and find a way to reconcile the warring tribes.
May God remember Kenya once again and heal this land, it is a beautiful land with beautiful people, but sadness and mourning has covered the land. May we all repent of our sins so that God can forgive us.
Be blessed, Thomas
