english update

Hi there,
I said I wanted to keep you posted on what is going on in Kenya. But this proves to be difficult since so much is happening in just one day. The fire is spreading so fast and in so many different directions that it is hard to know even where the whole thing is moving.
And fire is burning in so many towns and villages especially in the Rift Valley in a literal sense. Nakuru, the fourth largest town in Kenya, has been set on fire yesterday and the results have been devastating. More than 40 people have been killed, many of them hacked to death and houses set on fire by violent young and not so young people who deliberately look for a certain tribe, which they feel should not live in that area. They go out with the sole purpose to trace those with a certain tribal affiliation and kill them and destroy everything they have owned. The government has no control over the situation anymore. The police had to ask the military to intervene in order to keep some sort of order in the town but with no much avail. Despite a curfew last night, the killing continued and the burning of houses went on.
The complexity of the situation makes it hard to find a solution. A lot of it is the issue of landownership which has been disputed for many years. Another one is the simple desire to revenge for what has been done to their people in earlier days of the conflict. The spiral of violence and hatred is swiftly going downward and not one seems to know how to stop this.
We are extremely sad about the reality of events here in our institution since members of the minority tribe is moving out one by one. Especially since last night, when death threads were being made, people are running for safety. That means that they are trying to get some means of transport to bring first their families into safe places and then look for a hideout somewhere with more neutral tribes. Just this afternoon I myself took one family down to Nairobi after they had heard that if they would be found this weekend, they would be dead. Therefore I didn't think twice, when I was asked to take them.
The consequences of all of this are quite far reaching and as I said earlier, we don't really know where we are heading. But we know that God knows, and that helps us to keep calm and trusting.
Have a lovely and peaceful day, Thomas
