Hi there,
I just wanted to let you know some of the events of the last few hours in Kenya.
As I have shared before, the whole country was anxiously awaiting the announcement of the results of the general election. When it was finally announced yesterday afternoon around 5pm, Chaos broke loose. The chairman of the Election Commission announced that the Winner was Kibaki, the sitting president. The supporters of the rival, Raila Odinga from Western Kenya, could not accept the result of the elections. Almost immediately after the declaration of the winner, the swearing in ceremony took place at the State House. In the same time riots broke out in all major towns and cities all over the country. Killing and looting was now the order of the day.
In addition to the trouble, Raila Odinga announced yesterday that he is going to declare himself President of the nation. He said that the elections were not held fairly and a lot of rigging took place. Therefore he himself should be the rightful head of state.
The country is now divided and hatred has spilled all over. The capital city and other cities are under curfew and Nairobi right now is no go zone.
In the place where we are, about 60 km northwest of the capital, things are quite calm, only that members of Odingas tribe now fear violent attacks on their properties and lifes. Last night we had to accomodate a whole family in one of our halls, because they could not sleep in their own houses.
All TV and Radio stations where restricted from broadcasting anything live. Even getting news from what is happening is very difficult. We try to listen to the BBC and other international broadcasters.
I will keep you updated as news trickle in, Thomas
For now we are just watching and waiting
